FIRST BLACK GRADUATE OF WEST POINT MILITARY ACADEMY, 1877.

The National Scene was a ‘Family News Supplement’ of the Buffalo Criterion.

The Buffalo Criterion is WNY’s Black Newspapers Since 1925
Recording Black History Every Day!
Serving: Lackawanna, Rochester, Niagara Region
Go to: http://thebcn.com/criterion/news/

Now check out this photo:

The supplement was folded inside our large family Bible.
The photo was in my father’s photo album; un-labeled.
The back of the photo is stamped ‘H.E. Butler, solicitor for Life Size Portrait Work, 26 Charles Street, Jamestown, N.Y.’

Could these images be of the same man?
If so, then Henry Ossian Flipper has a connection with my Ancestors.
That’s exciting!

Of course, my next step is to track down H.E. Butler.
The cover artist for the illustration was Robert S. Pious.
The supplement was published, in February 1973, by L.H. Stanton Publications, Inc of New York City.

UPDATE!

Photo Restoration Artist & colleague Janine Smith posted an article on her blog titled, 'The Fascinating Mr. Flipper'. She included a couple of photographs that you must see! The connection of Henry Ossian Flipper to my ancestors gets more interesting everyday.

Genealogy tip: Interview your elders early and often (more than once) and bring those pictures along.

I just finished reading about your Henry Flipper on another blog - Janealogy or something close to that name. The article was called "Meet Mr. Flipper". Are you perhaps related?

Hi Sheri,

Further down in my post I gave a link to Janine Smith of Janinealogy.blogspot.com fame. Her post reminded me of my earlier one.

I haven't figured out the connection yet. Still researching! LOL

Hi George!

I guess I should have named my blog something easier! lol! I found Henry Flipper while doing document research. I found a three page letter he'd written in 1896. I started reading about him and was hooked! Thanks for the mention in your update! Great pictures, too!
